Anyone witnessing the devastation in war-torn Gaza would unanimously agree—there is no trace of humanity left there! Yet, amid the shattered roads where movement itself has become a challenge and the eerie silence of the graveyard-like streets, where only the sound of wooden prosthetic legs echoes, some individuals are still writing stories of compassion despite the overwhelming adversity.
According to international media reports, a doctor named Hassan Zain Al-Din has been defying all odds in war-ravaged Gaza, providing medical services to patients. Without fearing for his own life, he has been cycling for miles on broken roads for months, delivering medical care directly to people’s doorsteps.
His sole mission is to ensure healthcare for the helpless people of Gaza, no matter what. The relentless efforts and selfless service of Dr. Zain Al-Din cannot be measured by any standard—it is truly an immortal legacy. Doctors like Hassan Al-Din are not just a beacon of hope for the people of Gaza but for the entire world.
But What Is Happening Here?
How many such stories of humanity are being written in our own country? The harsh reality is that humanity seems to be vanishing here!
Recently, at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, a hospital attendant (aya) allegedly cut off the oxygen supply of a newborn patient, leading to the infant’s death. The most shocking part? The attendant did it simply because she did not receive a tip!
The victim’s family claimed that the aya deliberately stopped the oxygen supply just because they failed to give her the desired amount of money as a bribe. As a result, the newborn tragically passed away.
A Human Life Worth Just a Few Coins?
Can we even fathom this reality? A newborn’s life was taken over a mere tip! As expected, an investigation committee has been formed. If the allegations are proven true, the culprit is likely to be punished. But will punishment alone change the mentality that allows such cruelty?
Rather than just punishing individuals, we must eradicate the mindset that enables such inhumane actions. If people develop a moral conscience, such crimes will no longer happen, and punishment won’t even be necessary.
A Cycle of Forgotten Justice
We have seen this before—after such tragic incidents, there is an initial uproar, an investigation committee is formed, and sometimes attacks on hospitals take place, or the accused is arrested. But what happens afterward? For some mysterious reason, we never get to know the full story. It fades away like an unsolved mystery!
This culture of bribes, service charges, tips, and refreshments extends beyond the healthcare sector—it is deeply embedded in other service industries as well. This must be eliminated immediately.
Those engaged in healthcare and other essential services must always remember:
“Love is the best doctor.”
The first and foremost condition of true service is compassion and empathy for the patient. This is not just a moral duty but also a fundamental part of professionalism. Ancient scriptures emphasize that “words are more powerful than medicine.” Patients need to be treated not just with prescriptions but also with kindness.
Unfortunately, many healthcare providers today seem more focused on writing prescriptions mechanically, while some lower-tier staff feel entitled to tips—so much so that if they don’t receive them, they don’t hesitate to harm patients.
This is unacceptable and disgraceful. Such a toxic culture must be eradicated from the healthcare sector and beyond—urgently and permanently!
