Dues cleared

Adani restores full power supply to Bangladesh

Update : 27 Mar 2025, 20:00

Indian billionaire Gautam Adani’s company, Adani Power, has resumed full-capacity electricity supply to Bangladesh. The company is now delivering 1,600 megawatts from its Godda power plant in Jharkhand, India, after Bangladesh resumed regular payments of outstanding dues.

According to a Bloomberg report, Adani Power had halved its supply to Bangladesh last year due to unpaid electricity bills. However, four months after the reduction, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) confirmed that full power supply has been restored.

BPDB Chairman Rezaul Karim told Bloomberg on Thursday, “We are making regular payments to Adani and receiving electricity as per our needs.” However, he did not disclose the payment amounts or whether past dues had been cleared.

BPDB data indicates that Adani increased power supply more than two weeks ago.

Amid an economic crisis and government transition—Bangladesh's foreign exchange reserves began depleting under the previous administration—the country struggled to pay electricity bills on time. As a result, Adani Power cut its 1,600-megawatt coal-based supply from Jharkhand in November 2023.

With summer temperatures in Bangladesh averaging around 38°C, the restoration of Adani’s power supply is expected to significantly reduce load-shedding during the hottest months.

Meanwhile, sources familiar with the matter revealed that Bangladesh's overdue electricity bill, which had once exceeded $850 million, now stands at $800 million. The country plans to clear the dues within six months. Additionally, BPDB has provided guarantees to reassure Adani’s lenders and ease the company’s working capital constraints.
