Clashes, Chaos, and a Cry for Justice

Update : 04 Jul 2025, 11:07

Two recent incidents in opposite corners of the country have highlighted the alarming state of law and order in Bangladesh. In Patiya, Chattogram, a clash occurred between the police and a student organization.

Meanwhile, in Patgram, Lalmonirhat, an attack on a police station followed the arrest and sentencing of political activists on extortion charges.

These incidents point to a growing crisis of trust between law enforcement agencies and political/student groups — a rift that is increasingly disrupting public life.

Reports suggest that the unrest in Patiya began when police allegedly beat leaders and activists of a student organization. In protest, demonstrators demanded the removal and punishment of Patiya Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Zayed Md Nazmun Noor.

Protesters blocked the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway for nine hours, causing severe suffering for commuters. Although the OC was eventually withdrawn, demonstrators declared this was just the beginning — demanding a full investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

The conflict reportedly stemmed from the arrest of a member of a banned student group, followed by the police's refusal to register a case, which later escalated into violence.

At the same time, in Patgram, Lalmonirhat, after a mobile court sentenced two activists of a major political party on charges of extortion, a mob attacked and vandalized the local police station. At least 20 people, including eight police personnel, were injured.

Local political leaders claimed that a dispute between police and leaseholders was being unfairly pinned on their party. However, others alleged that individuals with political backing were engaged in extortion and taking the law into their own hands. This growing trend undeniably fosters chaos and lawlessness in society.

In recent times, the overall law and order situation in the country has shown signs of deterioration. Newspapers frequently report disturbing events and brutal killings.

Violent disputes within families and communities have also become more common. A decline in law and order often gives rise to such social unrest. A common thread in both aforementioned incidents is the emergence of immediate protests — sometimes violent — whenever actions by law enforcement are questioned or opposed.

These protests often involve road blockades and disruptions. This not only undermines the rule of law but also holds the general public hostage, increasing fear and insecurity.

The primary responsibility of law enforcement is to uphold the law. But when they face widespread public outrage, handling the situation becomes significantly more difficult.

At the same time, political and student organizations must act responsibly. It is worth reflecting on whether causing public suffering or resorting to violence is a legitimate way to press demands.

On the other hand, the administration must ensure impartial and prompt investigations into every allegation. If a police officer abuses power, swift and strict action must be taken. Political parties must also instruct their members to respect the law, and if any member is involved in misconduct, disciplinary and legal measures should be enforced.

Without respect for the law and a commitment to resolving conflicts through democratic processes, it is impossible to build a peaceful and orderly society.

To overcome this crisis, the government, administration, and political parties must work together.
