Dhaka College students clash with New Market traders

After violent midnight clashes between Dhaka College students and New Market traders, the students of Dhaka College locked in a clash with the traders of New Market in Dhaka again on Tuesday morning.

New Market area has been blocked off due to the clash. The brawl started at 12:00 a.m. on Monday.  Students of Dhaka College have decided not to open New Market on Tuesday as a result of the event.

Police said that the students of Dhaka College attacked a number of shops and thrashed the shopkeepers at the New Market minutes after 12:00 night alleging that the traders had tortured a Dhaka College Students earlier on the day during Eid shopping.

Police deployed tear gas and rubber bullets to keep the situation under control.

Two students and two dealers were injured as a result of the event yesterday. A number of police officers were also injured. In addition, a number of motorcycles and shops were set on fire.

The situation was brought under control after around two and a half hours. At 3:15 a.m., the principal of Dhaka College and the president of the hall escorted the students from the road to the college grounds.

Police then dispersed the crowd using rubber bullets. Several students were severely injured during this time.

The reason of the clash is not clear yet. Following the clash, Dhaka College authorities postponed all classes and exams of 19 April.
