At least five people of a family were killed and two others injured as a girder of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project fell on a private car in Dhaka’s Uttara on Monday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Rubel, 50, his wife Fahima, 40, her sister Jhorna, 28, and Jhorna's two children Jannat, 6, and Jakaria, 2, who got crushed inside the mangled car, said Yeasin Gazi, inspector of Uttara west police station.
Two other occupants of the car managed to escape with serious injuries and were rushed to a local hospital. They were identified as Rubel's son Hridoy, 26, and Ria Moni, 21.
The accident occurred around 4:30 pm when the girder of the Gazipur Expressway fell on the car when it was being moved by a crane in front of Gazipur Paradise Tower, said Yeasin Gazi, inspector of Uttara West Police Station.
Injured Hridoy and Ria Moni were rushed to a local hospital while the remaining victims including the children got stuck inside the car, he added.
According to Fire Service, the bodies of the deceased were recovered at about 7.30pm and sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue in the capital.
A family member said Hridoy and Ria Moni got married on Saturday and were going to the latter's house in Gazipur along with five other relatives in the car this afternoon.
Hridoy's father Rubel was driving the car when the girder fell on the vehicle.
Huge traffic gridlock and a gathering of people were seen in the area following the accident.
The girder was removed from the area around 10:00pm.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of the four people.
In a condolence message, the Prime Minister prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
