70 fishermen missing as trawler sinks in Bay

At least 70 fishermen went missing on Friday evening after five fishing trawlers carrying them capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Kuakata in Patuakhali district.

Capsized trawlers are- FB Ma Moni-3, FB Saiful, FB Al-Mamun, FB Kulsoom, FB Ashraful. Among them, FB Rafiq Mijhi’s trawler house is in Bhola’s Hazariganj. The fishermen of the remaining four trawlers have their houses in different areas of Mahipur police station.

President of Alipur-Kuakata Fish Market Owners Association and Chairman of Latachapali UP Ansar Uddin Mollah has been confirmed the matter.

The fishermen who were rescued said that the Bay is under the influence of low pressure. These trawlers, which were fishing in the sea, capsized after being hit by a storm.

A fishing trawler named FB Miriam said at least 70 fishermen were rescued by another trawler, but 38 fishermen are missing.

A rescue operation is underway for the missing fishermen, said Bangladesh Coast Guard officials.
