Tea workers continue strike for eight consecutive days

Update : 20 Aug 2022, 13:27

The workers of 167 tea gardens across the country, including 92 of Moulvibazar, continued their strike on Saturday demanding an increase in their daily wages to Tk 300 from Tk120.

It was seen on a spot visit at a tea garden on August 20 morning at different tea gardens that several hundred workers were chanting slogans sitting on the road beside the garden.

The workers started their strike sine die on August 13 to raise their wage from Tk 120 to Tk 300. After being suspended for two days on August 14th and 15th, they are holding a full-day strike again from August 16th.

Meanwhile, the workers held meetings with tea garden owners and wage board authorities for two phases, but the demand has not been met.

Acting General Secretary of Bangladesh Tea Workers Union Nirpen Pal said the pay was raised to Tk140 by increasing Tk20. “We rejected this proposal, we will respond to further discussions but our movement will continue," he added.

A tripartite meeting will be held in Dhaka on August 23 led by the Labour and Employment Minister and the secretary to solve the ongoing problem.
