Update : 29 Aug 2022, 12:39

The local administration imposed Section 144 at Ramgarh upazila in Khagrachhari on Monday as Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) called separate programmes at the same venue and same time.

The restriction will remain in force from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on August 29.

The upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Khondakar Mohammad Ikhtiar Uddin Arafat issued a notification over the issue on Sunday night with effect from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm on Monday from Masterpara to Ramgarh Municipality Building area.

Earlier, the upazila unit BNP called a procession at the memorial adjacent to Ramgarh Govt High School as part of BNP's central programme. On the other hand, the upazila unit BCL wants to organise a mourning rally and discussion at the same venue marking the National Mourning Day.

A few houses and shops were attacked in the market and nearby areas on Sunday evening. In the meantime, the houses of former upazila BNP president and former upazila chairman Belayet Hossain Bhuiya and his nephew Shahidul Islam Bhuiya, former upazila chairman Farhad, and his ancestral house were attacked. Four to five shops including Shaheen Library of journalist Bahar Uddin were also attacked.

BNP has complained that the attack was carried out from the procession of Awami League. However, the leaders of the Upazila Awami League have denied this.
