University student murder: 4 get death penalty, 2 get life term

A court in Cox’s Bazar sentenced four people to death and two to life imprisonment in the sensational murder case of university student Zia Uddin Faisal in the upazila on August 31.

The death sentence awardess are – Rezaul Karim alias Buillani, 20, Nurul Haque, 22, Ramzan Ali, 24, and Rubel, 20, of East Machuakhali village of P.M.Khali union in Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila.

Those who were convicted to life terms are – Shahin Uddin, 19, and Moni Alam of East Machuakhali village.

At the same time, those sentenced to life imprisonment have been fined Tk 50,000. The court of Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Md. Ismail handed over the verdict at around 11:30 am on Wednesday.

The deceased Faisal, son of Md. Nurul Anwar of Machuakhali village, was a student in the fifth semester of the Department of Law at Cox’s Bazar International University.

Giving details of the case, the administrative officer of the court, SM Abbas Uddin, said that Faisal used to protest and stop the sale of the drug business in the area, resulting in involving into a conflict with drug traders. 

On April 16, 2016, at around 8:00 pm, drug traders attacked Faisal on the north side of a mosque in the village. The doctor declared him dead when he was taken to the District sadar hospital in critical condition, he also said. 

However, Faisal's father Md. Nurul Anwar filed a murder case against 9 people with Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station.
