A court in Dhaka on Sunday sentenced expelled Jubo League leader SM Golam Kibria Shamim, better known as GK Shamim, and seven of his bodyguards to life term imprisonment in an arms case.
Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam of the Special Tribunal-4 handed down the verdict on September 25.
The seven bodyguards are: Md Jahidul Islam, Md Shahidul Islam, Md Kamal Hossain, Md Samsad Hossain, Md Aminul Islam, Md Delwar Hossain and Md Murad Hossain.
On August 28, the Special Tribunal-4 of Dhaka set the date for the delivery of the judgment in the case after closing arguments from both the sides.
GK Shamim and his seven bodyguards were produced in the court at 9:30am from Kashimpur jail.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) submitted the chargesheet on October 27 in 2019. On January 28, 2020, the tribunal framed charges against Shamim and seven others rejecting their petition of release.
GK Shamim, who was known as an influential contractor of Sabujbagh, Basabo and Motijheel areas of the capital, was arrested on September 20, 2019.
RAB filed three cases under narcotics control, money laundering prevention and arms acts against Shamim with Gulshan Police Station on September 21.
