Update : 30 Sep 2022, 09:53

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said highest security measures would be ensured during the five-day Durga Puja celebration beginning from Saturday in the capital.

"Durga Puja is being celebrated at 242 mandaps in the capital this year. Law enforcement agencies will ensure security round the clock at all mandaps," he told reporters on September 29 at Dhakeshwari National Temple after visiting overall security measures, reports BSS.

All puja mandaps and pandals will be brought under CCTV surveillance round the clock while members of Detective Branch of police, SB and other intelligence agencies will be kept deployed in plaintiff apart from police personnel in uniform.

Members of SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics), an elite tactical unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, will also patrol puja pandals.

Replying to a question, the DMP commissioner said the risk of terror attack at puja mandaps cannot be denied.

Security masseurs will be taken keeping all issues in mind as none can create any untoward incident, he said.

He said it is noticed that a clique makes communal provocation through spreading rumors on social media during such religious festivals and last year everyone saw such things. These kinds of risk cannot be denied, he added.

He said vandalism of partially completed idols took place earlier and it happened due to lack of round the clock duty of security personnel.

Volunteers and members of ansar will discharge duty round the clock to avert such incidents.

DMP additional police commissioner (Crime and Operations) AKM Hafiz Akhter, additional police commissioner (DB) Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, additional police commissioner (Traffic) Md Munibur Rahman were present, among others.
