Bangladesh rescues 30 Malaysia-bound Rohingyas

Bangladesh Coast Guard have rescued 30 Rohingyas after their trawler sank in the Bay of Bengal off Teknaf coast while fleeing to Malaysia illegally.

"The trawler sank in the deep sea off the coast of Harmunia Para area of ​​Teknaf Upazila's Baharchhara Union on October 4 morning," said Commander Delwar Hossain, Teknaf Baharchhara Outpost Station.

"Members of the Teknaf Coast Guard rescued the 30. Some are still missing. The rescue drive is on", he added.

Locals informed the coast guard after seeing some Rohingyas swimming from the sea in Harmunia neighborhood of Baharchhara Union of Teknaf on Tuesday morning. Later, coast guard members reached the spot and rescued them. 

The authorities could not confirm the total number of Rohingyas in the trawler.

"The trawler was heading towards Malaysia. Possibly, the trawler capsized due to overload of passenger", said Inspector Nur Mohammad, in-charge of Baharchhara police outpost.
