2 PGCB officials to be suspended over grid failure

Update : 16 Oct 2022, 16:07

Two officials of Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) are going to be temporarily suspended over national grid failure. Action will be taken against others responsible for the negligence by this week.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid came up with the assertion while talking to the journalists at the secretariat on Sunday.

The detailed identity of the suspended officials could not be known immediately. One of the suspended officials is an assistant engineer and another is a sub assistant engineer of PGCB.

Nasrul Hamid said, "The demand of load of the power was higher than the production. Everyone including DESCO was advised to cut down otherwise there would be disturbance and obstacles in the frequency. And it happened. They didn't follow the instruction and continued. As a result country experienced a blackout."

He also said that the first reason behind the grid failure was negligence.

The state minister also said, "The action has been taken taking that into consideration. Besides, we have formed two other investigation committees in this regard. All the reasons will be known after getting the investigation reports."

Earlier on October 4, Bangladesh experienced the second highest incident of blackout in the country's history. Everyone thought it's a regular incident of load shedding when many areas experienced power cut at 2:04pm on the day. However, later it was known that almost half of the country faced a huge blackout due to the national grid failure.

Millions of people had to suffer as there was no electricity for 6-7 hours at a stretch in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Cumilla, Memensingh and their adjacent areas. Earlier in 2014, country saw the longest blackout (for 12 hours) in the history.
