Thousands join BNP rally in Khulna ignoring transport strike

Thousands of people has gathered on Saturday (22 October) at Dakbanglow corner of Sonali Bank premises in Khulna as part of BNP's planned divisional rallies amid road and water transport strikes.

Due to scarcity of public transport, leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are gathering at the rally venue at Sonali Bank chattar on foot marching and chanting with small processions.

Meanwhile, locals too suffered for the lack of public transport there as Khulna has been separated from 21 districts and some upazilas.

The Khulna bus-minibus owners association and motor workers' union took the decision of suspending all types of bus services in the district, demanding that all improvised vehicles be declared banned on highways on Tuesday night. The launch workers in Khulna also embarked on a 48-hour strike on Friday morning.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other party leaders reached Khulna on Friday night to joint today's rally.

The BNP announced to hold public division-level rallies to protest against price hike of fuel and daily essentials and the killing of five BNP leaders and activists during the recent movement, and demanding the unconditional release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The rally is scheduled to formally begin at 2pm.
