At least 34 people were killed in 15 districts due to the impact of cyclone Sitrang. The cyclone crossed the coastal areas of Bangladesh on Monday (October 24) evening. It was raining cats and dogs for hours in many parts of the country on Monday.
The information of damage and casualties were known on Tuesday evening. Among the deceased, eight were killed in Chattogram, four in Bhola, four in Tangail, three in Cumilla, two in Gopalganj, two in Sirajganj, two in Cox's Bazar, one in Patuakhali, one in Barguna, one in Shariatpur, one in Gazipur, two in Munshiganj, one in Noakhali, one in Narail and another was killed in Dhaka.
Chattogram:
Atleast eight people were killed as a trawler capsized due to cyclone Sitrang at Swandip channel of the coastal area in Mirsarai of Chattogram on Monday.
Bhola:
A total of four people were killed in Bhola due to the cyclone. Three of them were killed as trees fell on them while another washed away in the high tide. However, the weather gets better on Tuesday and the people of the area started leaving the shelter centers.
There are disruptions of electricity and mobile network in the area. The farmers of many areas of Bhola experienced huge damage as their crops and fishes washed away in the water.
Deputy Commissioner of Bhola, Taufiq-e-Elahi Chaudhury said, "We are trying to estimate the damage. We are also making a list of the affected people. We will take necessary steps once the list is done."
Tangail:
Two police personnel and a criminal were killed in a road accident due to the stormy weather in Golabari bus stand area in Tangail on Monday. Another person was electrocuted in the rainwater in Sabalia area of Tangail on Monday night.
Cumilla:
Three people were killed as a tree fell on them when they were at their house at 11:00pm on Monday. The stormy wind broke many branches of trees and uprooted many trees in the area.
The deceased were identified as Nijam Uddin, his wife Sharmin Akter Shathi and their 4-year-old daughter Nusrat Akter Liza, hailed from Heshakhal Poschimpara village under Nangalkot upazila of Cumilla.
Confirming the matter to the media, Officer-in-Charge of Nangalkot Police Station Faruk Hossain said that they were trying to move the trees and recover the bodies.
Sirajganj:
A woman and her 2-year-old son were killed as their boat sank due to the cyclone in a canal coming from Jamuna River in Sirajganj Sadar area at 8:00pm on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Ayesha Khatun, 28, wife of Khokon and her son Arafat Hossain, 2, residents of Purbomohonpur village of the Sadar upazila of Sirajganj.
Officer-in-Charge of Bangabandhu Bridge (West) Police Station Mosaddek Hossain confirmed the matter to the media.
Gopalganj:
Two women were killed at Tungipara upazila in Gopalganj as tree fell on them due to the stormy wind during the cyclone on Monday night.
The deceased were identified as Sharmin Begum, 25, wife of Rezaul Kha and Rumichha Begum, 65, wife of Hannan Talukder.
Officer-in-Charge of Tungipara Police Station confirmed the matter to the media.
Cox's Bazar:
Two people including a child were killed due to the cyclone Sitrang at Teknaf in Cox's Bazar on Monday.
Patuakhali:
A worker of a trawler was killed as the trawler was capsized in Lohalia river due to cyclone Sitrang on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Nur Islam, 40, son of Rashid Molla, resident of Lohalia union under Sadar upazila of Patuakhali.
Narail:
A woman was killed as tree fell on her during the cyclone at Lohagara upazila in Narail on Monday afternoon.
The deceased was identified Morjina Begum, 40.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lohagara M Nasir Uddin confirmed the matter to the media.
Barguna:
An aged person was killed as tree fell on her during the cyclone in Barguna Sadar upazila on Monday.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Barguna Sadar upazila, Kaosar Hossain, said, "We have visited the victim's house. Upazila administration will take the responsibility of her funeral."
Shariatpur:
A sexagenarian woman was killed as a tree fell on her due to the cyclone at Jajira in the district on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Sufia, wife of Halan Musolli, resident of Sidarchar area under Jajira upazila of the district.
Jajira Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kamrul Hasan Sohel conformed the matter to the media.
Noakhali:
An 11-month-old child was killed as a tree fell on him due to stormy weather at Subarnachar in Noakhali on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Sanjid Afridi, son of M Abdullah, resident of the area.
Deputy Commissioner of Noakhali Dewan Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the matter to the media.
Gazipur:
A nine-year-old boy was killed as the roof of the house collapsed due to the cyclone in Ikuria village under Kapasia upazila of Gazipur on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Anisur Rahman, 9.
Munshiganj:
A woman and her daughter were killed after a tree fell on their house in Louhajang in the district on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Asma Begum, 28, and her daughter Suraiya Akter, 3, residents of Kanakshar area of the upazila.
Dhaka:
A rickshaw puller was killed as a wall fell on him due to the stormy wind at Hazaribag in the capital city on Monday evening.
