At least eleven people, including two Bangladeshi were killed and several others were seriously injured in a fire at a building where Sri Lankan, Indian and Bangladeshi migrant workers live in the Maldives capital of Male, early on Thursday, November 10.
The accident occurred inside a car repair garage situated at the junction of Iskandhar and Koarukendi Road in the capitaḷ. The fire was reported to authorities at 12:30 am, and was finally put out at 4:34 am. The first storey of the building was occupied by foreign nationals, who consist of all the deceased victims.
The fire started on the ground floor of a vehicle repair garage and slowly moved upwards engulfing the whole building.
According to fire officials, 10 bodies have been recovered so far of which nine are Indians. The tenth one is a Bangladeshi.
One Bangladeshi was injured in the fire is undergoing treatment at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital,
“The dangerous fire incident in the city yesterday is a very sad incident. Many people have lost their lives and a large number have been injured. The incident is currently being investigated. Condolences to the families of the deceased,” Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, President of Maldives tweeted.
