At least six people were killed as an ambulance collided with a truck at the Jajira end of Padma Bridge in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Robiul Islam, 28, driver of the ambulance, Jilani, 26, assistant of the ambulance, patient Jahanara Begum, 55, her daughter Lutfun Nahar Lima, 30, health worker Fazle Rabbi, 28 and journalist Masud Rana, 30.
Highway Police primarily said that the accident might have been occurred as the driver was driving for a very long time.
Robiul's brother Yeasin Hawlader said, "He and his brother were used to drive ambulance to meet the expenses of their families. Robiul started driving from Sunday and hardly had time to sleep. The accident occurred in Padma Bridge area."
Inspector of Shibchar Highway Police Station, Abu Nayeem Mohammad Mofazzel, said, "The accident took place at the Jajira end of Padma Bridge. We came to know that Robiul was in shift for 26 hours at a stretch. He was tired. He might have fell asleep and hit his vehicle with a truck in front of it. The ambulance went under the truck and crushed, leaving six people dead on the spot."
He also said, "We have informed the relatives of the victims. No case has been filed in this connection."
