The Universal Pension Management Bill, 2023 was passed in the National Parliament to bring all the elderly people under a universal pension scheme. The bill was passed at the parliament on Tuesday (January 24).
So far, only the government employees were enjoying the pension benefit. From now on, all the employees of the country will be come under the purview of pension scheme. A person will have to provide premium for at least 10 years uninterruptedly to get pension from the age of 60 until the death.
According to the bill, any Bangladeshi national aged from 18 to 50 will be eligible to take part in it. The expatriate Bangladeshis are also eligible to the benefits.
The parliament members from the opposition party appreciated the initiative of the government. They said that the pension scheme is quite similar to the DPS scheme of banks. However, they also asked to make it clear that how much the employees will get in return of their deposit.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal moved the bill and it was passed by voice vote.
