At least 19 people were killed and 30 were injured after a Dhaka-bound bus fell into a ditch in Kutubpur of Shibchar upazila of Madaripur on Sunday (March 19) morning.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Abu Naim Mofazzal Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shibchar Highway police station, confirmed the news. He said that driver of the Emad Paribahan bus lost control on the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga expressway at about 7:30am and later it fell into a ditch.
"Fourteen bodies had been pulled from the wreckage of the bus as of 8:30 am, and two more died while being transported to the hospital. Later three more people who were critically injured died in the hospital," OC added.
