Suspended Dewanganj mayor Shahnewaz arrested from Dhaka Hotel

Shah Newaz Shahanshah, the suspended mayor of Jamalpur's Dewanganj municipality who was sued for slapping a government official, was arrested this morning at Hotel D Meridian in Uttara, Dhaka.

The development was confirmed by ANM Imran Khan, assistant director of Rab's Legal and Media wing. 

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) member arrested him from 'Hotel De Meridian' in Uttara 12 No Sector on Thursday morning. He will be sent to Jamalpur.

The elite force cordoned off the hotel from this morning to nab the mayor, said RAB legal and media wing's assistant director ASP ANM Imran Khan. 

Earlier, Shah Newaz Shahanshah has been suspended on charge of slapping an education officer in Jamalpur district.

He physically assaulted Md Meher Ullah, an upazila secondary education office, on December 16 at a Victory Day programme.

Md Meher was conducting the programme at Dewanganj Government High School premises. He was calling the names of the officials inviting them to place wreaths in serial. The mayor was the eighth in the serial, he became enraged and began verbally attacking Meher. When the officer objected, the mayor is said to have slapped him.

A case against the mayor was afterwards filed with the Dewanganj Police Station. Later, a case has been filed with Dewanganj Police Station against the mayor. Investigation has already been started over the incident.
