At least six people died and seven others were missing as a picnic boat carrying about 46 people capsized in the Dohori Taltola canal of Ichhamoti River at Louhojong in Munshiganj after a collision with a bulkhead on Saturday night.
The incident took place around 9:00 pm when a sand-laden trawler hit the engine-run boat in the area.
Superintendent of Police Mohammad Aslam Khan confirmed the matter to the media.
On information, a diving team of fire service rushed to the place to conduct a rescue operation.
Team leader of Louhojong Fire Service Kayesh Uddin said, “The engine-run boat collided head-on with a bulkhead around 8:30 pm in the area. On information, locals and members of the fire service along with the team of the administration rushed to the place to rescue the people.”
Witnesses said the trawler was carrying some 46 people who were on board for a picnic.
Louhojong Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Abdul Awal said, “We rushed to the spot after hearing the news. We are trying to rescue the victims. Moreover, an investigation is on over the matter.”
