A 200 hundred years old traditional winter festival (Poushmela) has been organized due to the occasion of Poush Sankranti on Friday (31 December) afternoon. This traditional festival took place on a huge open field near the Dargah of Chawal Pir in Nabinagar village of Sherpur district. This one-day winter festival has been organized by the local people of Nabinagar. The festival also attracted hordes of domestic tourists every year.
As an attraction for the visitors, several traditional games were a part of this festival. The games list included- the traditional rural 'Gangi' games (wrestling), horse races and bicycle races. Prizes have been distributed among the participants after the gaming competitions. The municipality panel mayor Nazrul Islam was the chief guest at the award ceremony of the winter festival. The female counselor Nazma Begum, Awami League leader Haji Dulal Mia, Freedom Fighter Abu Taleb, Freedom Fighter Chan Mia, Convener of the Organizing Committee of the Fair Sheikh Mumtaz and others were also present at the festival. Apart from all the gaming competitions, there were many other stalls of various traditional delicious food items.
There were various handicrafts and utensils crafted by the potters of the nearby Palpara area. The shopkeepers also sold womens cosmetics, dresses and jewelry in the stalls of the festival.
The festival ( Poushmela) that took place on Friday, became more lively and cheerful with crowds of people of all ages, starting from children to adults. Baul songs have also been arranged for the visitors, as an entertaining event, in the Dargah Prantor at night. Like every year, a massive crowd has attended the festival.
