Raw sugar worth Tk1,000cr at risk; Air Force deployed

A massive fire that broke out at S Alam’s sugar mill at Moijjartek in Chittagong around 4pm on Monday could not be brought under control even after four hours.

Around 100,000 tonnes of raw sugar, estimated to be worth Tk1,000 crore, is at risk of being gutted in the fire. 

Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Md Abdur Razzak said: “15 units of fire service are working to control the fire. Besides, Members of the Bangladesh Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard have joined the rescue operation. Everyone is working together to bring the fire under control. However, no casualties have been reported so far. It is not known how the fire started.”

According to fire service personnel and sugar mill officials, the mill is located in the Moijjartek area on the bank of the Karnaphuli river. The fire broke out in one of the six warehouses of the sugar mill where imported raw and refined sugar was stored.
