Ramadan fasting begins Tuesday

Update : 11 Mar 2024, 19:02

The holy month of Ramadan will begin in the country tomorrow as the new crescent moon was sighted in Bangladesh sky today evening.. The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon-Sighting Committee in the conference room of the Islamic Foundation (IF) at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque today.

Religious Affairs Minister Md Faridul Haque Khan presided over the meeting.

According to the IF, Muslims will perform the first Taraweeh prayer on Monday night and they will have sehri in the early hours of Tuesday.

Muslims are meant to fast from dawn to dusk during the lunar month, a time of restraint and austerity. The government has already set the office timing for the holy month of Ramadan -- from 9:00am to 3:30pm -- for all government, semi-government, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions.

All these offices will remain open from 9:00am to 3:30pm with a break from 1:15pm to 1:30pm for Zohr prayers during the month.

Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday that the holy month of Ramadan will commence on Monday, after the Ramadan crescent moon was sighted in the Kingdom, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Following Saudi Arabia’s announcement, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) also declared Monday as the first day of Ramadan, according to Emirati state news agency WAM.
