SUST students end hunger strike after 7 days

Update : 26 Jan 2022, 11:49

A group of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) students ended their hunger strike, which began on January 19 and demanded the expulsion of Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Farid Uddin.

The students drank water to break their fast at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the request of Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal and his wife, professor Dr Yesmin Haque.

Dr. Zafar and his wife had arrived at SUST about 4 a.m. He told the students that a high level delegation from the government went to his house in Dhaka and a discussion about SUST situation was held with them. They assured him that the demand of the students will be met.

Since January 19, more than 20 university students have been on hunger strike, asking that Sust VC Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed be fired immediately.

SUST students have been protesting since January 13, calling for the expulsion of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall Provost Zafrin Ahmed Liza, as well as a three-point demand.

On January 16, the agitated students confined the VC in a room of IICT building. After that police arrived on the scene to save the VC, and they got into a fight with the students.

Some students were injured at the moment when police charged them with batons and fired sound grenades and rubber bullets. On the same day, police also filed a criminal complaint against 300 unidentified students.

On January 19, 23 students began a fast unto death campaign calling for the VC's dismissal, and four more students joined them on January 23.
