Three passengers of a private car were killed on Wednesday morning when a train rammed into the vehicle at a rail crossing in Dinajpur's Birampur upazila.
The accident took place at 7 a.m. on Wednesday in the Ghoraghat Railghunti area.
Birampur Police Station OC Sumon Kumar Mohanto confirmed the accident news. The deceased could not be identified yet.
Due to limited visibility caused by dense fog, witnesses say a Kurigram-bound 'Kurigram Express' train plowed into a private car carrying four individuals at a rail crossing.
"Four persons, including the driver of the private car, were going to Joyhat from Parbatipur. While crossing the rail crossing at Ghoraghat Railghunti area of the Upazila around 6:45 am, a train hit the private car and dragged it 50 yards away. Three people were killed on the spot," said Birampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sumon Kumar Mahanta.
"Three bodies were recovered and sent to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital for autopsy," he added.
However, according to eyewitnesses, the private car driver got down and fled before the accident.
The gatekeeper, according to locals, was not present at the crossing.
"The train line's gate is now under construction. A rope has been used to seal the gate. However, the car driver failed to notice it, resulting in the collision," said Saifuzzaman, the gatekeeper.
