Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is preparing to travel abroad for advanced medical treatment.
Although plans were initially made for her to go abroad earlier this month, her physical condition delayed the trip.
Preparations are now underway again, including arrangements for an air ambulance. If all goes as planned, Khaleda Zia and her entourage will leave for the United Kingdom in early December.
Reports indicate that Khaleda Zia will meet her elder son, Tarique Rahman, in London for the first time in nearly eight years. She may also travel to the United States for treatment at Johns Hopkins.
On her return, she is considering performing the Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, depending on her health condition.
Her family, doctors, and top BNP leaders are closely monitoring her travel and health arrangements. Khaleda Zia is currently receiving essential medical care at home under the supervision of a medical board.
A specialized air ambulance has been arranged, and at least 16 individuals, including her personal physician, Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, will accompany her.
Dr. Zahid Hossain, a member of her medical team and BNP’s Standing Committee, informed the media that all preparations for Khaleda Zia’s overseas treatment have been completed.
He added that she is both physically and mentally preparing for the trip and that her health has stabilized somewhat.
The 79-year-old leader has long suffered from liver cirrhosis, heart disease, lung and kidney complications, arthritis, and diabetes. On October 27, 2023, she underwent surgery for her liver cirrhosis with the assistance of three expert doctors from the United States.
Additionally, a pacemaker was implanted in her heart on June 25 at Evercare Hospital. Khaleda Zia has been hospitalized multiple times for treatment of these conditions.
