NEIR goes live

No deregistration, no used phone sale: BTRC

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has stated that registration must be cancelled before transferring or selling a used mobile phone. The directive was issued after the full launch of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system.

In a notice published on Tuesday (February 3) by BTRC’s Spectrum Division, the commission said the NEIR system has been fully operational since January 1 to ensure transparency and security in mobile phone management across Bangladesh.

BTRC said that with the introduction of NEIR, all mobile phones currently active on the country’s mobile networks have been automatically registered. This will enable effective measures to control the use of illegal and stolen mobile phones.

The notice further stated that users must complete deregistration before changing the SIM card of a phone registered in their name or before handing over or selling the phone to someone else. In other words, the handset must be removed or released from registration under the owner’s National ID (NID).

For the deregistration process, users will need the last four digits of the National ID card or passport number that was used when purchasing the SIM, BTRC said.

For detailed information about deregistration, users are advised to visit the BTRC website at neir.btrc.gov.bd. Assistance is also available through the BTRC call center (100) or at the nearest customer care center of the respective mobile operator.
