The temperature in northern Bangladesh, particularly in Nilphamari, continues to drop, with dense fog and chilly winds persisting. The ongoing decrease in temperature has intensified the cold, creating difficulties for day laborers and low-income individuals.
On Monday, at 6:00 AM, the lowest temperature recorded in Syedpur, Nilphamari, was 13.8°C. Due to the dense fog, vehicles were seen driving with headlights on in the morning, and air traffic has also been disrupted.
Lokman Hakim, the acting head of Syedpur Weather Office, stated that the region's temperature has remained below 15°C for the past few days. The area has been covered by dense fog since midnight.
This morning, the temperature reached 13.8°C, and it may drop further in the coming days.
The cold weather has caused significant hardship for laborers and day workers who are unable to go to work due to the cold and fog. The chilly winds and biting cold in the north, combined with a lack of warm clothing, are causing severe discomfort for people in the area. Even though the sun rises during the day, roads are covered with fog again by evening, reducing human activity. The elderly and children are especially struggling.
Nabiul Islam, a resident of Chilai village in Domar Upazila, said, "The cold and fog have been intense for the past few days. It's too cold in the morning to work, and we're facing a lot of problems."
Saju Islam, another local, added, "The cold is more intense in the mornings and evenings. It's difficult to go out in the morning due to the fog and chill."
Additionally, the cold weather has led to an increase in cold-related illnesses in the district. Children and the elderly in district hospitals and upazila health complexes are seeking treatment for colds, coughs, pneumonia, and diarrhea. Doctors are providing necessary advice and treatment to raise health awareness during this cold spell.
Meanwhile, as of 10:30 AM on Sunday, December 8, no flights had landed at Syedpur Airport due to the weather.
