Shawwal moon sighted, Eid tomorrow

Update : 30 Mar 2025, 18:57

The crescent moon of the holy month of Shawwal (1446 Hijri) has been sighted in Bangladesh today, Sunday. As a result, Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated across the country tomorrow, Monday (March 31).

The announcement was made after a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee at the Islamic Foundation’s conference room in Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Sunday evening (March 30). The meeting was presided over by Religious Affairs Advisor Dr. A.F.M. Khalid Hossain.

Following the meeting, the religious advisor stated, "The moon of Shawwal has been sighted in the country. Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed nationwide tomorrow, Monday."

On this occasion, President Md. Shahabuddin and Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus have extended their heartfelt greetings and best wishes to the people of Bangladesh.

The date of Eid depends on the sighting of the moon and changes every year. Since lunar months last either 29 or 30 days, Muslims usually wait until the night before Eid to confirm its date. As the Shawwal moon has been sighted, Eid will be celebrated after 29 days of fasting this year.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and several Middle Eastern countries observed Eid-ul-Fitr today (Sunday, March 30) following the sighting of the Shawwal moon on Saturday (March 29). Some regions in Bangladesh, following Saudi Arabia’s calendar, have also celebrated Eid today.

The confirmation of the moon sighting in Saudi Arabia was announced by the Haramain-based websites Insight the Haramain and the Haramain Sharifain Facebook page, marking the end of Ramadan 1446 Hijri.
