Rohingya repatriation

Myanmar to take back 180,000 Rohingyas in landmark move

Update : 04 Apr 2025, 20:38

Myanmar has agreed to repatriate 180,000 Rohingyas in the first phase. On Friday, during a meeting on the sidelines of the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister U Than Shwe conveyed this information to Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the High Representative of Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor.

Myanmar has given final recognition to 180,000 Rohingyas as eligible for repatriation from the list of nearly 800,000 Rohingyas who have taken refuge in Bangladesh.

Between 2018 and 2020, Bangladesh provided this list to Myanmar in six phases. Among them, the final verification of another 70,000 Rohingyas is still ongoing.

Their identities will be cross-checked through photographs and names. Once the verification process is completed, their fate will also be determined.

This is the first major step toward a long-term solution to the Rohingya crisis. Not only will these 250,000 Rohingyas be repatriated, but the remaining 550,000 will also be verified and processed as quickly as possible.
