Six persons have been detained in the gang rape of two Garo schoolgirls in Mymensingh, including the main suspect.
Teenagers were raped while returning from a wedding on the night of December 27 in the district's Gazirvita Union in Haluaghat upazila.
Bangladesh Garo Adibashi League and members of St Peter's Primary School staged a protest for demanding exemplary penalties for the perpetrators.
The families of the victims filed a lawsuit against ten people on December 30. The arrests were made after nocturnal raids, according to Detective Branch spokesman Shafiqul Islam.
"The Detective Branch apprehended five people named in the investigation, while RAB [Rapid Action Battalion] arrested the sixth suspect," he stated.
Riyad, Sharif Mia, Mizanur Rahman, Mia Hossain, Abdul Hamid, and Rokon Mia are the main suspects.
They were all between the ages of 19 and 22.
Rab's Legal and Media wing director, speaking to the media today about the arrests, said Riad confirmed that all of the accused attended the wedding ceremony and followed the victims on their way home that day.
Riad told Rab that six of the ten accused raped the females on that day, while four others stood guard.
According to the Rab official, Riad used to run a group of 10 to 13 young people, and he was once detained for narcotics possession.
